How to play Peg Solitaire

Bring your attention to one round of Peg Solitaire. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Look at what changes after your first action. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Consider the next action carefully.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
